HEROES CONVENTION 2026!

That's right, at nearly the last minute I decided to drop everything and head back to Charlotte, NC for the one-and-only Heroes Convention, June 12-14! I didn't think I could make it this year but I didn't want to miss out on all of the fun after the last two years, which were great and I am sure this year will be the best yet.

Heroes is the show for true fans of comic books and the people who make them. No other show celebrates the art form like Heroes.

I will be in the same basic spot as last year, only with even more real estate and with a new neighbor, my good friend Kaare (rhymes with Atari) Andrews, who is attending Heroes for the first time. We'll be having a great time all weekend signing books, talking shop, selling prints, comics, and original art, and sketching.

The Ruby Key Kickstarter

Holly Lisle's Moon & Sun 1: The Ruby Key was the very first book cover I illustrated 18 years ago. It was originally published by Scholastic, but has been out of print for years. I also provided the cover for the second book in the series, The Silver Door. While there were plans for more books, sadly the series was cut short.

Author Katharina Gerlach is bringing the first two books back into print and will be completing the series. She has launched a Kickstarter for the project. If successful, in addition to republishing my original covers, I will be providing a new cover for book 3, and possibly a book 4.

While I am not personally involved in the Kickstarter or the creation of the books beyond providing the covers, I know that Ms. Gerlach believes in this project with all of her heart and will be doing her best to write a compelling story and fitting conclusion to the series. This started out as another convention piece as seen in my previous post, but I took it much further, essentially creating a finished, as-yet-unpublished, cover illustration. Paul Smith's short run of about ten issues on Uncanny X-Men is the definitive era for me.

Convention Art

I really love attending conventions--it's always a joy to meet so many enthusiastic fans of comics and art and to be able to talk shop and share our passion for all the things we love.

One thing I have always struggled with, however, is sketch/commission requests. As much as I wish I were better at it and could sketch for everybody, it has rarely worked out. I suppose I just prefer drawing in the comfort of my studio where I can hopefully produce work that won't make me cringe with embarrassment. Nobody wins when I try to sketch at a show!

So this year, I decided to try something different and commissioned myself ahead of the shows. I drew whatever I felt like and enjoyed drawing some characters that no one ever requests, at least not from me.

Here is some of the art I made to bring along to Heroes Convention and Baltimore Comic Con this past year (I could have sworn I already shared these, so apologies if this is a repeat post). There were a couple other pieces I neglected to scan/photograph, including another Catwoman and a Wonder Woman, but they'll probably pop up online somewhere and I'll post them here when they do.

All of these pieces are 9"x12". I've included a few photos along with scans to get a better sense of scale. I also went overboard on a large Savage Land Rogue painting which I brought with me to Baltimore Comic Con, but I'll save that for it's own post in a bit.

All of this art was sold at the conventions, but I do have one more piece to sell and will be posting that shortly. Stay tuned!

Baltimore Comic Con 2025!

Heroes Convention 2025 was once again a wonderful show filled with great art, great comics, and great people. Thank you! I can hardly wait for next year.

If you missed the big show in Charlotte, however, never fear, I am happy to say I will be a guest at Baltimore Comic-Con, October 17-19, 2025!

I have only attended Baltimore once, and that was something like 20 years ago, so I am very happy to be returning, especially after having to cancel last year. I don't expect any such problem this year and I am already preparing for the show.

Like HeroesCon, Baltimore Comic-Con has a fantastic guest list focused on comics creators, both artists and writers.

I will have a great selection of high-quality prints (the best way to view my work--large, high resolution, and perfectly accurate color), exclusive comics, original art, and more. I'll be signing, drawing, and reviewing portfolios for all you artists out there.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I have had to cancel my appearance at Baltimore Comic Con. My apologies to everyone hoping to see me there. Hopefully, I will see you somewhere down the road!

I will have news on upcoming convention appearances soon. 

That's right folks, I will be at Baltimore Comic Con, Sep 20-22. This is only my second time attending in 20 years! 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the show and I understand it will be the biggest and best ever. The guest list is packed with all sorts of comics creators and great exhibitors. 

Look for me in corner booth #2215, right beside my buddy Kaare (rhymes with Atari) Andrews in booth #2214.

I'll have a wide selection of prints, my Powerpuff Girls #1 exclusive comic (see previous post), and a bit of original art available for purchase. I will also be signing throughout the show, so get those comics ready!

I may do some head sketches at the con, time-permitting, but I've been pretty busy at the last couple of shows I attended, so it may be a tall order.

So, in the meantime, if anybody is interested in a pre-show commission, I'm going to draw one here at home and bring it along. The price is $1000. Heroes Convention 2024!

That's right, folks! I will be at the legendary Heroes Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA this coming weekend, June 14th-16th! You will find me behind tables 808-810 in the main Artist Alley.

I will have new prints, a bit of original art, and will be signing all throughout the show. CGC will be there as well, so if witnessed signatures and graded books are your thing, now is your chance.

And YES, I will be drawing! Sketches, sketch covers, remarques, commissions--I'd like to offer something for just about every budget, so please stop by my table to sign up for a drawing of your liking. I won't be able to get to every request, but I will do my very best.

If you have more than one character request, you will be able to list a few options for me to choose from. This is also a good way to increase your odds of getting a piece.

A price list for all of the above will be available at my table, but I expect the range will be from $100 all the way to $1000 (possibly more for you serious collectors out there, time permitting).

HeroesCon may be the only true comic book convention in existence, with nothing but comics creators and vendors and no other nonsense, and the guest list this year is astounding at nearly 400 artists, with many living legends amongst them.

All 280,000 sq. ft. of the Charlotte Convention Center will be packed with wall-to-wall comic book goodness. I am thrilled to be able to attend and look forward to three days of inspiring art as far as the eye can see. I hope to see you there!

New Champion of Shazam: Mary Marvel #1 original cover art!

This is the original cover art for NEW CHAMPION OF SHAZAM #1.

If you enquired about this art two years ago when I drew it and I told you I did not have an original to sell...well, I was mistaken. It was in a drawer for two years.

The art is mixed media (pencil, ink, acrylic) on 100% cotton illustration board. Please note that it is slightly smaller than the typical comic board. It measures 10"x14" (25.4x35.6cm).

If anyone is still interested in purchasing this original artwork, please contact me using the link above and we can work out a deal. I can also explain how it wound up in a drawer for two years.

Comic Art Live interview 3/26 at 9pm EST!

UPDATE: My appearance on Comic Art Live has been canceled. I decided it wasn't the right format and platform for me.

A better plan might be for me to do my own livestreams in which I can speak freely and in depth about my work and everything that goes into it and answer all the questions I can, if anybody is interested.

I wish the great throng of devoted fans that surely planned on watching a speedy recovery from what must be a crushing disappointment. Stay strong, I will talk about pencils another day.

Comic Art Live sprung out of the legendary Comic Art Fans art collector website, and as such, this will be all about original art. I will be showing off all sorts of originals from throughout my career and there may even be an opportunity to purchase some. I'll be talking about my process and how specific pieces were made, and whatever else folks are interested in. There is a live chat where viewers can comment and ask questions as well.

I'm really looking forward to talking shop and offering a very rare glimpse behind the scenes. This is a first, so be sure to be there!
