I'm thrilled to say that I will soon be joining the incredible crew of Nickelodeon's forthcoming THE LAST AIRBENDER: LEGEND OF KORRA animated series. Here is the limited edition poster I drew of Korra astride Naga for San Diego Comic Con.
I've been a long time fan, collected your Sky Between Branches and NYX to name a few but this, THIS, solidifies both my fandom of your works and the Avatar series.
Joshua while I love everything about your work I really love your backgrounds. Do you use Painter for them? Those clouds look so nice. I love the clean crispness of your line and characters with the naturalistic looser (but still somehow clean) finish of your backgrounds. I think my favourite background of yours is that wraparound green book cover piece with the blonde fairy and boy and girl and green misty forest backdrop. It reminds me of all the stuff I love about Edmund Dulac. Are you a fan of that guy?
Thanks so much for the really nice comments, everyone!
Craig- I do occasionally mess around in Painter, but 98% of my stuff is done in Photoshop, including this piece. The primary reason I lean on Photoshop is the superior speed and stability, and also that I enjoy the lack of realism in the way that PS applies color- Painter can produce some fairly convincing brushes, but if I really want to paint, I tend to use real paint. The real trouble with Painter is that even after all of these years, its interface is a mess, and it still chugs even on top-end machines. Painter 12 seems to be a step in the right direction, however, so I'll keep playing around with it. Keep in mind that for my approach to color and digital painting, really almost any program will do the job. They all have the basic tools to do what I do, you just have to spend some time with them to figure out what works.
Laura H- I didn't even get one myself! Nickelodeon only had a handful printed, and it sold out right away. Maybe if we're lucky, they will eventually reissue a bigger print run.
Danny Araya- I will be the art director for the second season of the show (14 episodes). We're going to keep pushing the art and design as far as it will go.
Thanks again for all of the great comments, everyone.
Congratulations on the Korra gig! I don't think there's a show I'm looking forward to watching more. That poster is beautiful, and I hope they decide to issue another print run so I can get one!

Oh, and yes, I am a big fan of Dulac, as well as Rackham, Nielsen, and others of their ilk. Their work and the folklore it draws on just sings to me.
Do you have any of these left? Great work!
Laura H- I didn't even get one myself! Nickelodeon only had a handful printed, and it sold out right away. Maybe if we're lucky, they will eventually reissue a bigger print run.
