Here is my cover for Supergirl 50. I started this one by coloring an extremely rough pencil sketch for editorial approval, thinking I would redraw the line art for a cleaner foundation to color later, but kept working on the original color sketch so much that it wound up being the final cover.
Supergirl is imprisoned in amber, which was quite difficult to render and have look right without obscuring too much of the figure or her colors. I didn't do much with the background either since it is largely covered by the logo and other type. I'm still not sure if I quite pulled it off, but I ran out of time and had to call the cover done.
I used both Photoshop and Painter for this one; Painter primarily for hair and washes of color on the figure, and Photoshop for everything else. I probably could have done it all in Photoshop with the same end result, but I do enjoy coloring looser drawings in Painter.
That's all for now.

Awesome. As always.
The coloring style of the hand reaching out of the amber contrasts the rest of the picture heavily, the hand looks like a 3D element. That's a interesting effect to say the least.
Supergilr's facial expression is what it comes down to in my opinion, and you did a good job there!
I think this cover will really please fans of a rather sketchy, "unfinished looking" style. I apprciate it very much!
best,
martin
I love this cover and am absolutely gutted I didn't see it in the store to buy it. It's a really really nice piece of work. You should be very proud.
This is amazing! I've been loving your Supergirl covers and this is definitely a contender for my favorite.
If she's trapped in amber though, can we extract her DNA, and create clones for people to come view on a theme park/private island? We could call it Kryptonian Park! I think it MIGHT be safe than those pesky dinosaurs that eat the attendees. :p
Beautiful cover illustration Josh; there is so much acting in her face and hands, very successful!
awesome! Great cover Josh!
I think people are drawn to the face by its sheer expressiveness which allows for some leeway in the background. As for the pencils, there should be a softness to it. She's in suspended animation and encased. I don't think hard lines would have worked.
Wow, this is amazing. I have to say that you definitely pulled it off, Josh.
wow cool i love the textures and everything!
grandioso trabajo Joshua!
peace and be nice

Really nice colors. Love the pallet you used.
Amazing cover!!, Really nice drawing and awesome coloring. It will be great if you can post the sketch for this cover.
雖然說上班很累,不過還是得努力應付每一天,看看文章休息一下,謝謝你哦!........................................
Amazing art love the expression and the textures!!! Heart it!!
Joshua is fantastic, but was confused with a lightness of colors, which gave the idea of suffocation by the supergirl.
Was too
just AMAZING
Just wow.. Your blog is my absolute favourite, I love the process videos. Such talent =]
Love your work, it is so fresh, vibrant and expressive. Thank you for putting such beautiful art into the world! : )
hey josh im a huge fan! i just bought this cover.. and as alwasy in american comics pissed that the interiors were ugly ass hell.. oh well thats expected in american comics, no consistency.. i dont read them anyway
i love how ur females are soft, young and cute looking. its more anime in nature and more likable
i really hate comic chicks usually cuz of how they draw them to be about 45 years old, buff with abs.. non feminine gargantuans.. and ugly ass hell, i mean look at the interiors of how they drew supergirl.. fuckin ugly
keep up the awesome drawings! do more covers like this! its like a new higher level of comic art.. doesn't awlays have to be dark inked lines with crappy simple colors.
wow. such a beautiful piece. i think this is truly one of your best. really nailed the amber encasement without making it too sharp. the light casting on her costume and hands is really excellent. i think her skirt looks wild. love what you do and can't wait to see what comes next. hopefully sky between branches...?
Great cover!! Awesome colors. I like your regular lineart/color work, but this painterly style works great for the covers!
A bit confused, buf you can see the character perfectly!!
are you going to make more SG covers ?

Great job, especially on the expression!
I never got in to superhero comics for some reason, but your covers make me really want to read Supergirl. I'll have to look for it. You just make her look so human.
