Beauty Queen

Here is the cover for issue 13 of Vertigo's 'American Virgin' series. It is a departure from the usual because of its finish style and because it was created digitally from start to finish. I kept putting off the work until I was up against the deadline, so I sent in a rough idea drawn in Painter and Photoshop, which to my surprise was approved. I fully intended to draw the piece properly, but again I couldn't quite find the inspiration to drive me to the drawing board.

With two days to go before the deadline, I sat down at the computer to re-examine my sketch. I then decided to just go for it digitally, which was really an attempt to fool myself into working. I opened up the original sketch in Painter 9.5, dug up some reference where needed, and went to town. Eventually, I wound up with what we have here. I don't love the style and it needs further refining, but that is all she wrote for this one. I would have posted the original layout, but in my usual gung-ho style of eliminating unwanted art from my hard drive, I threw away my only copy and painted over the original file.

I've decided that I will retire from covers on American Virgin with issue 14. I'm tired of my whining.

When I first saw this I wasn't sure if it was yours or not... but I looked at it again and kept seeing your painter style.

I like it... it is different, but I refreshing new piece! Make the last one a REAL home run, the run of covers that you have done for this book are nothing short of phenomenal.

I'll be adding this to the site shortly, I am just working on Skottie's now :)

The phrase "created digitally from start to finish" just sent a shudder through the original art collecting community.

Nice to see you trying new things and not sticking to the style that the public knows you for. Issue 14 gotta be hot if you plan on it being your last.

Looking forward to those upcoming Batman covers.

I've just seen on the CBR scrolling the new Previews catalogue.

A damn good pic, J! I really like your "standard" light, clean style but this one seems a good move. And I always think that an artist has to try new experiments in order to improve...

wow, that's very diferent from your usual look. It's still fantastic though, the whole image drips satire in the most satisfying way. I can really feel the mood coming through that fixed grin. The painting has that wonderful refined-but-still-loose look that I just love from painter as well.
Seeing your covers on an interesting comic drawn by becky cloonan really is a joy I'd miss if you stopped.

I have to say, this one is fantastic. I've been a fan of your stuff for several years now, and this is my favorite. It's a very different style to see from you, which is always great from the artist's point of view. It's painterly, but precise at the same time. You may not love it, but for me, I'm always excited when I see an artist I admire and respect treading in new territory, so props to you man. Major props. Keep on kickin' ass. Peace!

Reminds me of Bill Sienkiewicz's work, circa STRAY TOASTERS/ELEKTRA ASSASSIN.

God, have I been there before. Trick yourself to draw. Ha. It's funny, cause it's true.

I hope you try some more like this. Could be a new evolution.

I love it.
